PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Mark Butz is an environmental science graduate (Macquarie University).   His skills, knowledge and perspectives have been shaped by more than 30 years of practical experience, including: 

• more than 26 years in senior public service positions in State, Territory and Australian government agencies, within environment & heritage, and health portfolios
• more than 20 years of active participation in the community sector (health, community development, landcare, environment education and peace education; governance and practical levels); and 
• a diverse range of engagements as a consultant, facilitator and writer.  
  

   
Combining all of these, Mark has developed:

Extensive experience across: group facilitation organisational planning/development   community building  team building development and harnessing of knowledge, motivation and capacity  governance

Background literacy in:  environment and heritage  planning and management of natural and  cultural resources  an ecological view of health education for environment and health; and urban and regional planning issues/processes.

This has included practical areas such as:

client and stakeholder liaison  community engagement and participation communication planning and delivery  program development  project management  complex coordination  high-level secretariat  public policy and legislation development   government processes and representation  organisational development  human resource development  relationship brokering

resource management planning   needs analysis knowledge management and brokering  development of communities of practice strategic planning and business planning  management of change and transitions  training and capability development  education for the environment and health   peace education monitoring, review and improvement   adaptive management.

   
In addressing these diverse content areas, Mark has become an accomplished facilitator of stakeholder and community participation and engagement. 

He has particular expertise in the emerging field of cultural translation – bridging gaps of communication and understanding between participants from different political, administrative, technical, scientific and community spheres.  

His extensive experience is also applied to training others in skills for facilitation, communication, participatory leadership, influencing and negotiating.  He holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110).
 
He is an experienced writer, editor and proof reader of scientific/technical, quasi-legal, historical/biographical, geographical, educational and promotional materials.
